Physical therapy focuses on range of motion, flexibility, gentle strengthening, gradual initiation of cardiovascular activities, and patient education including instruction for a home exercise program. The overall goal of PT for women at Birk Grove is to improve endurance, flexibility, and strength. These gains should result in improved function during day to day activities as well as an enhanced quality of life.

Initial PT evaluation

The first PT visit is reserved for getting baseline information via a complete physical evaluation. Objective measurements are obtained allowing a customized treatment plan to be developed.

Follow up visits

Patients at Birk Grove will have two or three PT appointments per week. The patient's customized treatments are gradually progressed over subsequent “in-studio” visits monitoring their responses and altering as needed. An important component to success is compliance with the home program in which each patient should be actively engaged. During PT, patients may take part in the following activities:

  • Cardiovascular activities
  • Therapeutic exercise utilizing swiss balls and resistive Theraband
  • Therapeutic stretching
  • Moist heat
  • Ultrasound (deep heat)
  • Electrical stimulation
